From 2015 – 2019, HIV diagnoses decreased or stayed the same amongst all ethnicities except American Indians / Alaskan Natives. From 2015 – 2019 the number of HIV diagnoses increased amongst American Indians / Alaskan Natives.1
In 2021, South Dakota saw 693 cases of syphilis, a 1,286% increase over the 5-year median of 21 cases. In 2021, the number of congenital syphilis cases increased in South Dakota, including an increased number of fetal and infant deaths. American Indians/Alaska Natives are disproportionately infected.2
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends staying up-to-date on your vaccines. For most people, that means taking primary and booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Currently, in the United States, 78% of people have taken at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, 67% are fully-vaccinated, and only 32% have received a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.3 We still have some work to do. With COVID-19 cases rising over the past couple of weeks; we encourage you to get vaccinated to protect yourself, your relatives, and our communities.
